Lower back pain is a common problem that is noted in people of all age groups. It is often the result of lumbar spondylosis caused by disc prolapse, trauma, pregnancy, wear and tear, or degeneration of bones due to aging, etc. The lumbar region of the spine consists of 5 bones numbered L1 to L5. A lot of the mechanical stress of the body is borne by this area of the spine making lower back pain a common issue.

“Spondylosis is a blanket term used to describe any problem associated with the spine. Lumbar spondylosis specifically refers to lower back pain caused by the degeneration of vertebral discs in the lumbar region of the spine,” says Dr. Kiran B Nair, CEO, of Vaidya Healthcare in Perumbavoor, Kerala.

Many times, the pain and discomfort become so unbearable that one is tempted to try any possible remedy to get some relief. One such method is manipulation therapy. It is a method that is employed by physiotherapists, chiropractors, etc to provide immediate relief from back pain, neck pain, and other spinal problems. A quick, measured pull or a controlled thrust by the practitioner at a specific point gives instant relief. There are many places that offer this type of treatment that promises long-term relief. However, manipulation therapy is usually frowned upon by many in the medical profession.

Dr. Kiran is of the belief that manipulation therapy does work, but only in the short term. At Vaidya Healthcare, manipulation therapy is used as part of the treatment plan. “When people come to us with back pain, our aim is to make sure that they are cured. The treatment regime we use is multifaceted that employs multiple techniques to achieve the desired result,” says Dr. Kiran.

Dr. Kiran believes that the treatment for lumbar spondylosis should focus primarily on 2 major aspects: patient comfort and complete cure. At Vaidya Healthcare, the treatment regime recommended for lumbar spondylosis usually lasts for 2-3 weeks. “We are able to reduce the inflammation within the first 5 days of therapy, following which manipulation therapy is used to relieve the intense pain that plagues the patient,” says Dr. Kiran. The instant relief from the pain relaxes the body and makes it more receptive to receiving further Ayurvedic treatments as recommended by our physicians.

The problem with using manipulation therapy is that it gives the patient a false sense of having been cured of lumbar spondylosis. What they fail to realize is that if further treatments are not continued the pain will come back with a vengeance. It is also a risky procedure that can cause irreversible damage to the spine when done by inexperienced or untrained individuals.

Dr. Kiran warns, “Manipulation therapy is a great technique to provide immediate relief from lumbar spondylosis. However, one should never confuse it with actual treatment that can cure the problem.” For long-term relief from lumbar spondylosis, Dr. Kiran’s advice is to follow the 3-week holistic Ayurvedic treatment offered at Vaidya Healthcare.
